& Directions according to Zuni cultural beliefs Directions such as east, west, north
and south also have significant relevance to the Zuni fetish power scheme. The power scheme is divided into two groups, protective
and healing animals which include the mountain lion, bear badger, wolf, eagle, and the mole, and the hunting and prey animals
which include the mountain lion, coyote, bobcat, wolf, eagle, and the mole. Each
guardian animal also has a symbolic color associated with it. Mountain Lion
– guardian of the north. Believed to be the most powerful fetish a hunter can possess. Considered the elder brother
of all other protective and hunting animals. Its color is yellow. Believed to possess leadership and resourcefulness. Bear - guardian of the west. Bears carved in any white material or stone are considered more powerful in their
curative abilities. Its color is blue. Believed to possess strength, introspection and the power of the soul. Coyote –
also guardian of the west. Used for hunting rabbits. Its color is blue. Believed to be a trickster. Badger –
guardian of the south. Believed to assist medicine men and shamans dig the roots and herbs required for healing. Its color
is red. Believed to possess aggressiveness and perseverance. Bobcat –
also guardian of the east. Used to hunt antelope. Wolves –
guardian of the east. Believed to have very strong hunting powers and assist Zuni hunters when searching for larger game.
Its color is white. Believed to possess wisdom, and is a pathfinder on journeys of survival. Eagles- guardian
of the sky. Used to hunt small games or used as a spirit or prayer carrier. Also used to make a connection with the divine.
Its color encompasses the rainbow. Moles –
guardian of the underground. Protector of growing crops. Its color is black The animals listed below and all others do not hold primary importance
to the Zuni fetish power scheme but are believed to represent certain symbolisms. Frogs –
